Carlos Fiolhais

Professor Carlos Fiolhais earned a PhD in Physics and is Full Professor at the University of Coimbra. He was also a professor in the United States and Brazil. He is the author of 140 scientific papers in international journals, several science textbooks and several books on science communication, some of which have been translated into foreign languages, most of which are published by Gradiva. His last book was the History of Science in Portugal (Arranha-Céus Editora).
He was founder and director of the Center for Computational Physics, University of Coimbra, where he installed the largest Portuguese computer for scientific computing. As a science communicator, he created and directs the Rómulo – Centro Ciência Viva, University of Coimbra. He also directed the journal Gazeta da Física, a publication of the Portuguese Society of Physics, and is a member of the committees of several international physics journals (in 2011, he chaired the Scientific Council of the European Physics Journal). Professor Carlos Fiolhais was director of the General Library of the University of Coimbra. He is responsible for the Education and Science and Innovation programs of the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation. He has received several awards and distinctions.
