Ana Rita Araújo

I did my first and my master degrees in Biochemistry at the University of Porto. I focus my interests in the areas of enzymatic catalysis, molecular signaling and cell fate. I have a particular interest in the application of interdisciplinary tools, such as mathematical and physics models, biochemical studies and computational and theoretical analysis to those fields. Besides science, I like to photograph landscapes, draw, and visit art galleries.

Meet the students

Cátia Carvalho

I did my first and master degree in Biochemistry, in Porto. Scientifically, I fell in love with the precision and elegance of the mitotic machinery and the regulation of polarized domains within a cell. Non-scientifically, my friends (and everything that "comes" with them) are my passion.

Delfim Duarte

I graduated in medicine from the University of Porto and joined the specialty training in haematology. GABBA has given me the opportunity of being exposed to great ideas, minds and diversity. During the PhD, I hope to find the most acute continuation and answer my questions about haematopoiesis and stem cells. Apart from science, I love traveling and to taste good food, in good places!

Diana Rodrigues

I did my first degree in Biology and then a Master in Molecular and Cell Biology in the University of Coimbra. I am interested in doing research in Neuroscience, especially to study cellular and molecular basis of animal behavior.

Elsa Sousa

I received my first degree in Biology and my master degree in Molecular Oncology, both from the Universty of Porto. I am currently interested in the characterization of epigenetic alterations underlying cancer development and progression. Apart from science, I like cinema and ballet.

Raquel Real

I graduated in Medicine from the University of Porto and completed a residency in Clinical Neurology. My main scientific interests focus primarily on cognitive aging and neurodegenerative disorders. Apart from science and medicine, I also love cinema and cooking.

Sílvia Lourenço

My first degree is in Molecular Cell Biology from FCT-UNL and my master degree is in Molecular Biology and Genetics from FCUL. My main scientific interests involve genetic regulation mechanisms and their involvement in the emergence of human genetic diseases. I love to dance, read, and travel and enjoy the company of family and friends.

Renato Martinho

Studying Biology in the University of Lisbon where I also did my Master's degree on Molecular Biology and Genetics taught me that the world still has a lot of questions to be answered. It is this idea of the unknown and wonder that drives my day. Besides, I love good TV shows, unexpected endings and...

Victòria Brugada

I graduated in Genetics and Biotechnology from UTAD, in Vila Real, and did my master degree in Biochemistry from the University of Porto. Since my childhood I have always been very curious about Nature and Biology. I quickly fell in love with the fascinating field of Developmental Biology due to the magic complex networks of signalling pathways that regulate basic developmental mechanisms of tissue growth and patterning. Books and photography are my main interests besides Science.

Andreia Correia

I am a Human Biologist with a master degree in Medical Biotechnology, both from Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. My scientific interests focus on understanding how our brain perceives the world and trying to apply this knowledge into robotics. Besides science, my other passions include cooking, music, and travelling.

About GABBA

GABBA stands for Graduate Program in Areas of Basic and Applied Biology. It is a 4-year doctoral program from the University of Porto that iniciated in the academic year of 1996/1997 from the iniciative of several academic institutions, namely the Faculty of Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine and the Abel Salazar Institute for Biomedical Sciences. In addition to the link to these faculties, GABBA is hosted by the two major institutes of biological research linked to the University of Porto: the IBMC-INEB (Instituto de Biologia Molecular e Celular - Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica) and the IPATIMUP (Instituto de Patologia Molecular e Imunologia da Universidade of Porto).

In each edition of the program, 9 to 12 students from distinct backgrounds are selected and receive a 4-year PhD fellowship, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). During the first semester, the students attend teaching modules with expert faculty from several Portuguese and foreign institutions, consisting of lectures on various relevant topics in biological research, which are intended to contribute to the development of critical thinking. At the end of this semester, the students have the opportunity to visit and choose the laboratory where they will develop their PhD projects. In addition, each year the students must organize an international symposium, which allows them to train several skills, including teamwork capacity, the establishement of international liaisons, fundraising experience and the hability to interact with the society at large. This year, the GABBA Annual Symposium will be held on July 17 and will be dedicated to the topic of Communicating Life
